The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the arrest of all those involved in the attack on a Deputy Commissioner of Police in Brass, Bayelsa State, on Sunday.
The IGP, who gave the order in Abuja, said he would no longer tolerate a situation where people attack police personnel on legitimate duty, no matter their position in society
Adamu, who described the attack as unwarranted and unprovoked, warned that the police under his leadership would not tolerate such brazen acts of impunity.
The IGP, in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Frank Mba, said five persons have been arrested in Umuahia, Abia State, over an attack on a Deputy Superintendent of Police while on duty at a collation centre.
The statement read: “The Inspector-General of Police, Acting IGP M.A. Adamu, has decried the attack on a Deputy Commissioner of Police in Brass, Bayelsa State, on Sunday, February 24, 2019, and has ordered for the immediate arrest, comprehensive investigation and diligent prosecution of persons involved, no matter their positions in society.
“The IGP, who described the incident as unwarranted and unprovoked, warns that, under his watch, such brazen acts of impunity will not be condoned.
“In a related incident, five male suspects have been arrested in Umuahia, Abia State, over an attack on a Deputy Superintendent of Police, who was patriotically defending the sanctity of the electoral system at a collation centre in Umuahia. These attacks have, once again, highlighted the risks and hazards inherent in policing our clime, and the need for stakeholders and government at all levels to continue to support the officers and men of the force in the discharge of their responsibilities.
“Meanwhile, the IGP has commended all Nigerians, who, by their words and actions, have clearly identified with the force by denouncing these barbaric and uncivilised actions against police officers performing their legitimate duties.”
Meanwhile, a police corporal has been reportedly shot dead by gunmen while escorting election results from Ipokia town to Ilaro collation centre.
The policeman, Sunday Idoko, Daily Sun gathered, was part of the police escort when their convoy was attacked and shot at around 8pm on Sunday by suspected hoodlums in Eredo area of Yewa South Local Government Area, Ogun State.
The state’s police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the hoodlums would be brought to book.
The results of the House of Representatives for Ipokia/Yewa South Federal Constituency were being taken to Oronna Hall in Ilaro.

He said that the State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Wale Abase, to commence investigation into the matter.
Abimbola, however, said that the election result was intact.
“The unfortunate incident happened on Sunday evening, when he was escorting election results to Ilaro. The hoodlums ambushed the vehicle conveying the result. We are on the trail of the hoodlums and we are going to arrest them,” he added.
